چکیده

--We monitored 38juvenile Peregrine Falcons (Falcoperegrinus) up to 3 mo immediately after their release from a hack box during 1999-2000. The restoration site was a cliff near Eagle Point Park in Dubuque, Iowa. Falcons were released in a staggered manner from mid-June until late July each summer. Older falcons remained at the site longer than at previous urban releases and interacted with the younger falcons. The four mortalities (11%) confirmed during the observation periods were discovered and reported by citizens near the release site. We used radiotelemetry, observations of colormarked birds at the hack site, and recovered mortalities to estimate weekly survival rates and dispersal patterns. We estimated weekly survival rate to be 0.988 (SE = 0.01), and our weekly resighting rate was high: 0.885 (SE = 0.03). Juveniles were observed for an average of 4.3 wk in 1999 (SD = 2.5), but only 3.4 wk in 2000 (SD = 2.3). Accordingly, weekly fidelity rates were year-specific: 0.903 (SE = 0.03) in 1999 and 0.795 (SE = 0.05) in 2000. No mortalities were attributed to Great-horned Owl (Bubo virginianus) predation, but substantial numbers of owls were seen in summer 2000. The presence of owls in 2000 may have contributed to the dift•rence in fidelity rates and dispersal patterns between years.

Morbidity, Survival and Productmty of Rehabilitated Peregrine Falcons in the Upper Midwestern U.s

--We xamined morbidity, survival and breeding success of 168 free-ranging, midwestern Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus) submitted to The Raptor Center, University of Minnesota, for veterinary care during 1986-94. Field dam and returns of banded birds were used to compare postrelease survival and productivity of rehabilitated Peregrine Falcons to survival and productivity of nonrehabilitated ...

Legacy or colonization? Posteruption establishment of peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) on a volcanically active subarctic island

How populations and communities reassemble following disturbances are affected by a number of factors, with the arrival order of founding populations often having a profound influence on later populations and community structure. Kasatochi Island is a small volcano located in the central Aleutian archipelago that erupted violently August 8, 2008, sterilizing the island of avian biodiversity. Pr...

Cross-continental Patterns in the Timing of Southward Peregrine Falcon Migration in North America

—We analyzed the timing of southward migration of Peregrine Falcons (Falco peregrinus) across North America, based on passage data compiled by the Hawk Migration Association of North America, supplemented with two other similar datasets collected by individual observers at sites in western Canada. The results show two distinct continental-scale patterns. First, the north to south progression of...

Post-fledging survival of northern goshawks: the importance of prey abundance, weather, and dispersal.

Effective wildlife conservation strategies require an understanding of how fluctuating environmental conditions affect sensitive life stages. As part of a long-term study, we examined post-fledging and post-independence survival of 89 radio-marked juvenile Northern Goshawks (Accipiter gentilis) produced from 48 nests in northern Arizona, USA, during 1998-2001. Information-theoretic methods were...

Environmental contaminants in prey and tissues of the peregrine falcon in the Big Bend Region, Texas, USA.

Peregrine falcons (Falco peregrinus) have been recorded nesting in Big Bend National Park, Texas, USA and other areas of the Chihuahuan Desert since the early 1900s. From 1993 to 1996, peregrine falcon productivity rates were very low and coincided with periods of low rainfall. However, low productivity also was suspected to be caused by environmental contaminants. To evaluate potential impacts...
